I think it’s safe to say that every bride’s worst nightmare is an unexpected breakout on her big day. With the stress of planning a wedding, we all know it’s not easy to make skincare a priority. We took to the experts at Be Gorgeous Cosmetics in Downtown Halifax to answer some frequently asked questions about how to achieve that JLo glow when you walk down the aisle.
What are some of the reasons behind unexpected breakouts?
Mary: Stress, lack of rest, too much alcohol leading up to the wedding and not drinking enough water.
What are some steps you can take to ensure your skin is clean and clear when you wake up on your wedding day?
Mary: We have a really cool product here at Be Gorgeous, they are called fluids. Think of little glass tubes full of nutrients for your skin. An extra hydrating serum 2 weeks prior to your wedding can make a big difference. We have a lot of different types of fluids for different skin problems.
Sometimes when people have a breakout, they think washing their face more than once a day is the answer. Why can this make things worse?
Mary: If you have oily skin, this can cause the breakdown of your protective moisture barrier and cause an overproduction of oil. ‘Normal skin’ is the right balance of oil and moisture. We’re always trying to feed our skin the right product to bring us back to the ‘normal’ state of oil and moisture.
Why is it important to moisturize, no matter what your skin type?
Mary: To keep the skin from reaching a state of dehydration, which can lead to overproduction of oil and increased sensitivity.
But what if moisturizer always makes me break out?
Mary: It’s important to use the correct moisturizer for your skin type. For example, people with oily skin should be using an oil-free moisturizer. Always remember to change the texture of your moisturizers with the seasons. It’s beneficial to use a lighter one in the summer, and something more hydrating during the colder months.
Some other tips to consider include keeping your skincare routine simple and consistent, and not changing up the products you use too often. Find the ones that work for you and stick with them. Also – if you’re a fish lover, plenty of research shows eating salmon 3x per week leaves your skin GLOWING.
